What Your Doctor Won't Ask You

The questions worth bringing to your next appointment, from a hormone specialist who's tired of watching women get dismissed.

Most women leave the doctor’s office having answered questions rather than asked them. That’s backwards, says Dr. Elena Marsh, an endocrinologist who has spent fifteen years treating women whose symptoms were dismissed as stress.

“Come in with a list,” she says. “Sleep, cycle, mood, energy — write it down beforehand, because you will forget half of it under fluorescent light with a clipboard in your hands.”

The conversation that follows is less about diagnosis than about permission: to ask twice, to request a second opinion, to trust a body that has been telling you something for months.
