The Raise I Almost Didn't Ask For
A senior director on the negotiation she nearly talked herself out of, and the script that changed her mind.
I had the number written down for three weeks before I said it out loud. Every rehearsal ended the same way — I’d round down, soften it, wrap it in an apology.
What finally moved me wasn’t confidence. It was arithmetic. I wrote out, in plain terms, what I had built that year: the accounts I’d saved, the process I’d fixed, the hires who were thriving because I’d trained them well. Competence, it turns out, is the best script there is.
I got the raise. Not all of what I asked for, but close, and I have never again mistaken a modest ask for a humble one.
